Stinky Cheese

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

I’m a fan of all kinds of cheese, particularly when I’ve got some fruit to enjoy it with. And the other day I was craving some cheddar ‘squeaky’ curds. Given the choice between Cache Valley and Gossner, I’d pick Cache Valley any day. But I wasn’t given that choice, so Gossner it was.

And as I ate some curds with a crispy braeburn this morning, I thought, hmm, needs salt. Hmm, not quite as moist as I’d expect a curd to be. Hmm hmm hmm. But they were better than no cheese, and they complimented my apple nicely.

Then I noticed my grocery receipt. Apparently the folks at Macey’s prefer Cache Valley too…

I didnt think they were THAT bad.

Interactive Star Chart

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

I ran across Astro Viewer when I was trying to google my family’s constellations. Of course it was quite handy in planning our constellations for the star ceiling, but I think it’s pretty cool to play with too, particularly when you use the buttons to “fast forward” and watch how the sky changes.

Vela Supernova

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Today we’re working on a star ceiling for our movie-room-to-be. Because the fiber optic cable might be a little hard to work with, we’re not going to try to replicate the night sky, but we are going to include “our” constellations from the zodiac (Even though I don’t particularly care for astrology). And we wanted it to look like stars even with the lights off. So I was also trying to think of what to paint on the ceiling, when I remembered the Vela Supernova Remnant. One of my friends had pointed it out to me several months back thinking the name was a funny coincident given the whole SuperNovia thing. I’m hoping I can figure out how to do this in paint. :-D

Goodbye to the Boxes

For the past two weeks I’ve been letting my children sleep in boxes. I guess I was thinking they’d get tired of it sooner. Well, they did get tired… (more…)

New Rooms

Amazing what kids do when left to their own devices..

Amazing what kids do when left to their own devices..

After sharing a room pretty much since Mary was born, I guess Ethan and Mary got tired of waiting for their new (separate) bedrooms to be finished. So they’ve decided to sleep in separate boxes instead.

And they’ve designed them to their liking, too. Both boxes have windows and doors, pictures on the walls inside, and disco lights in the ceilings. Ethan cut out a series of circles to let in interesting light patterns. When they want it dark, they simply replace the cardboard.

The paper Ethan left says “Need Tuck-ins” Apparently I was a bit too late as this guy got to bed with his glasses AND school clothes on!

Am I a bad mother for letting them sleep in their boxes every night till they get tired of it? It’s been almost two weeks now, but I figure as long as they are sleeping (and they are) I might as well let them live it up.
