But what do you DO?

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

I heard this question today at a lecture by Josh Coates, CEO and Founder of Berkeley Data Systems. A person you’re hiring should know what they do well, and quickly be able to prove how well they do it. That was the general idea anyway.

You might imagine my embarrassment after the lecture when the girl next to me turned and asked me what I did, and my response began with “Uhh, well….” (more…)

Neighborhood Parades

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Laura Moncur, one of the few Utah Girl Geeks I know, blogged today about doing a parade down the street with her sister in 1980. The photo she included is absolutely adorable, and oh the memories that rushed back!

My sister and I had a parade just like that once! Only she’d chopped up my long, luxurious hair in zig zags so I’d look like a clown. When we got back, my mom was so sad/mad, she gave me the infamous buzz cut that made everyone in first grade think I was a boy. I just wish she wouldn’t have been so upset she forgot to take photos, because despite the trauma, I have great memories.

So I think I’d like to set one up for my kids too. Not the city children’s parade. THAT is a circus, and it’s far too hot out by the time that rolls around anyway. Just a round-the-block bike parade with streamers and wagons and the whole nine yards. I can hardly wait! And I -will- take photos, no matter what :)

Chocochicken

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Chocolate keeps showing up in the oddest places lately. Recently, on a whim, I tried a few dark chocolate chips on my yams, and it was heavenly. Even Jared the yam-hater keeps talking about how tasty they were.

But chocolate on chicken .. That’s one I didn’t see coming. (more…)

Spring vs Winter Haiku

Winter vs Spring - snow on a lilac bud

Winter vs Spring - snow on a lilac bud

I’d originally posted this in March 2009 on a haiku Wednesday, in honor of the weather. Time and time again, this little pair of haiku rings true. I’ve got one on Fall, too. One of these days I’ll have to add one for Summer. :) And without further ado:

Unassuming Spring
Peaks from the backstage curtains
Hiding from applause

Conceited Winter
Thinks the hurrahs are for her
and does an encore

A Three Dollar Apology

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Rose colored glasses do make the world a prettier place.

Rose colored glasses can't be all that bad, right?

How many women out there swoon for flowers? Could I be the only one? Knowing these roses-in-the-rough cost less than three bucks helps me to keep the gesture in perspective enough to know I must watch for true penitence. And of course, even if had they cost thirty or three hundred dollars, an apology simply can’t be bought. But try as I might to remind myself they weren’t enough, I couldn’t help but adore their beauty and snap a photograph to remember them before they wilted away.

Guys, if you’re really very sorry, say so, and then show your sweetie you love her in word and consistent deed. Flowers bode much better when you’re just buying them because you love her and not because you’re trying to beg forgiveness. My suggestion? If you must buy flowers, order them online, and while you’re waiting for the bouquet to arrive, make a concerted effort to actually understand how she feels. Give her support, trust, appreciation, respect, empathy, and dedication. If she’s feeling better the next day, a surprise bouquet will be more likely to have its intended effect.
