Thank you very much for you reply, Lizzie, and for the link to this other article. I haven't read the whole thing yet as its early morning here. I wanted to be certain to thank you for your comment before my busy day is over. But from what I have read so far, it looks to be spot on.

I wholeheartedly agree that web design is about function and architecture as well as identity, and especially about finding how to best meet the users' and the site owner's goals. Very well said, and I am glad we share that conviction. Give my regards to Mr. Hunt from me and the rest of my web design class.

I would absolutely have to agree if we were discussing 'Web Design' in the same context as 'Graphic Design', or 'Fashion'. Ben Hunt does not consider it in this way, however. The sites are chosen because of their ease of use for the user. Sites that often display a lot of information relevant to different users, in a way that makes the sites easy to use for all of them. Not overly decorated for no reason.

It is true that there will always be a sense of fashion, what is current in Web Design, reflecting what we consider appealing for the decade, however the article is not discussing this alone. It is Design to be used. A business would be foolish to have a website that did not reflect its own identity, but just as importantly that did not work for it - help it achieve its business goals, and the goals of the site visitors. If we consider Web Design to be far more than fashion, more about function and architecture, there is a different perspective.

Another article that gives added depth to this view is:

Thanks for your thought provoking post.

Hehe, yeah, I can't say it's a bad site at all.. and I think the Mozilla site serves its purpose very well. I just don't know about the superlatives :-)

LOL - His whole list of sites seem slanted. I agree Apple (and all Apple products) are designed to be pretty. To make people want them. And as soon as it is the coolest thing out there, Apple kills it and makes the new trend.

I have never thought Apple's site was the best in the world. Furthermore I don't care for Mozilla.com either. But who am I?
