Hey MaryBeth, I’m glad you posted that. I’m guessing alot of people thought the same thing & it makes me sorry I wasn’t clearer in the first place. Tell me if this makes sense:

First, as far as kicking the man or whatever goes, this isn’t meant to injure anyone. It’s meant to help the people who participate as well as the recipients of their donations. So while I’ll agree that a few dozen or even a few thousand people doing this really isn’t going to fix the recession as a whole, it WILL help someone.

Another thing that makes this very different from the mini-gas boycotts, is that EVERYONE buys gasoline regularly, but there really aren’t that many people who regularly donate the stuff they don’t use. If someone wants to do this today or tomorrow or any day instead of March 17th, perfect. I just thought March 17th would be a fun day to do it, given that we already associate the day with green and luck and all that. I would hope it’d just be a good built-in reminder.

I am hoping too that people will use the time between now and then to consider buying something that will help them in the long run. And that as they go through their stuff to consider what they can give to someone else, they’ll take a moment to count their blessings, and that even in rough times they have the means to make a difference. Even if it’s a small one.

Velda, I haven't seen the website, but I know what the plan is. Here's the deal...to me this seems like it ranks up there with only buying gas on a certain day to kick it to "the man". Sure, people will not buy gas on a certain day, but they will buy it the day before or the day after. Sure people will buy something on the 17th, but they won't do anything the day before or the day after. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Off to check the site :)
