Alright, this is going to sound like a very cheesy and egotistical post. I appologize. But anyone who knows me knows I love quotes. In fact, coming up with a good one of my own has always been a goal of mine, because maybe it’ll mean I’ve made a difference. So here’s my attempt at scratching one item off life’s to-do list:

Bitter words are hard to eat

I say it from experience, unfortunately. But Is it original? Is it bad? It is a bit cheesy, I know, but I happen to like cheese so we’re good there. As far as I’m aware, it’s original. I also tried other ways of saying the same thing in case any of them rang a bell, and also trying to come up with the best way of saying it. I’m liking the first though for its simplicity.

Make sure all your words are good, in case you have to eat them.

And the couplet version, which seems fun and memorable but dated somehow… maybe because if my Grandma were still alive she’d have it embroidered on a pillow:

Make sure all you say is sweet;
Bitter words are hard to eat.

Feel free to quote me

I was watching the republican debates a few weeks ago thinking, gee, Ron Paul sure looks familiar. When I realized why, I could hardly stop snickering. A quick search on google revealed I wasn’t the only one to notice the uncanny resemblance, but I didn’t find any great photos to support the argument. If I were a mutant, I know my super power would probably have something to do with photoshop — and now is the time to use it.

Disclaimer: This is NOT an endorsement for or against Ron Paul — though I have run into a few spam-happy Ron Paul fans who just may be evil mutants. I just couldn’t help myself.
<img src="/media/1/20070812-ron-paul-magneto.jpg" alt="I will bring you hope, old friend. And I ask only one thing in return: don't get in my way. I didn't take this photo, btw - I will probably move it to another category.

For more fun (and more trouble than I want on my innocent little web blog) search for xmen movie + magneto quotes. And for some super fly Ron Paul t-shirts, go here.

From a random discussion on time, I’d posted my thoughts:

Think of being in a car traveling at high speed down an unfamiliar road versus how you would perceive the same car from an airplane. In the car everything rushes by because you can only see so much at once. From a plane, that same car hardly appears to be moving at all because you can see its entire path at once . “Time” as we know it is simply a product of our limited perspective.

I had a blast in Seattle with Hands-On Web Hosting and the graphic design / visual communications people from HOW, graphicdesign.about.com, and Creative Latitude. Here a few of the pics I took on this trip. More to come when I get access to my sister’s CF card! A few of you know I went to Seattle this weekend. Many of you have been asking for pictures. I took quite a few. I won’t post ‘people pictures’ without permission, though, so most of these are just pics of the sites we saw and what not, plus a picture of a Classic Conor. I also have -alot- of pictures from Pike’s market, but they were taken with Eva’s digital card. She’ll be around in Utah within the next day or two so I’ll get them from her then

Enjoy this for now.

Seattle has quite a few panhandlers and homeless people; something I’m not used to here in Happy Valley. My faith teaches that we’re ALL beggars in a way, and that just as we want mercy and kindness despite our failures, we need to look for ways to help those who need us however we can. What surprised me is how contemptuous so many people were as they were asking (and even getting) donations. It reminded me that I need to be a bit more grateful myself.

Anyway, I’d just given a slice of delicious cake I was saving for myself to a guy who claimed he was hungry. I turned back just in time to see him throwing it away. And a few minutes later — cakeless and coinless — I met Bill. He didn’t ask for anything, in fact he was just sitting there on his park bench giving directions to whoever needed them. I wished I’d saved the cake for him. But he was grateful to tears just to have someone sit and chat for a while about who he used to be and how many people have been so kind to him in this rough patch. His toes had been amputated during a cold winter, but all he could talk about is the doctor who helped him, and how he was happy that he could still dance. He said he’d be happy to have his picture taken, so here it is. He is worth remembering.

Working at home has me in a bit of a habit. I’ve considered myself lucky really. Every evening after work, I take a shower and put on a clean uniform: a T-shirt and pajama pants. Some have stripes, some have flowers, others have bright polka dots. All cost me a few dollars each at my favorite food and drug store. They are very comfortable and kinda cute. My random “textured” hairstyle forms as it dries in my sleep. And every morning, I wake up ready to roll.

Startrek was dead on in many ways, and not just when it comes to technology — they knew that in the future, everyone would work in their PJs. But something tells me the future isn’t here just yet. Last week there was parents night at a school I’m hoping to get my kids into this fall. With just a few minutes left to get dressed and go, I caught myself planning to wear my nice PJs: the dark blue pants with suns and moons, and a matching yellow and orange tie-dyed v-neck.

So this morning, like all the other mornings this past week, I’ve showered and put on a clean skirt, blouse, sandals, and a necklace, and put some effort into making my hair work. If you’ve missed the pajama-clad wonder, don’t worry, I’ll probably be back to normal soon.

(Edited: So maybe you don’t know what I’m talking about with my favorite PJs. I’ll post a pic.

Celestial themed PJs with a tie-dyed T - my favorite!

I really do like this outfit. If only others felt the same way)

Today I’m reminded of a snippet of a conversation I had with Conor, owner of Hands-On Web Hosting, the company I work with. In reference to how busy Conor was one week, I’d said something along the lines of, “And here I was thinking one could only burn a candle at two ends!” He replied, “Oh, no, there are plenty of ends to burn if you cut it into little pieces!”

Now I’ve got a full on bon-fire. Between full-time technical support, all kinds of drama with the construction loan, the Green Sun web project (which included a complete phpBB template / skin from scratch), potty training two toddlers, selling MaryKay, three other end-to-end web design & development projects, moving to a new apartment… and occasionally a little sleep… this summer’s been one wacky white-knuckle ride. And, since we’re probably (hopefully!) finally going to close on that loan and start building next week, I feel like we’ve just got off this huge roller coaster, found out there’s no line, and are trying not to keel over as we run to get back on again. C’mon! It’ll be fun!! :-p

Kudos to Google for pointing that out today with their logo. When I was a very small kid (maybe six or seven) I figured I would like to grow up to be either Dr. Seuss or Vincent Van Gogh. By the time I was eight I’d realized that wasn’t really possible, and learned of the difficulties he dealt with in this life. Being a bit on the nerdy / artistic / outcast / dramatic side of the things I felt like I could empathize with him. And I cried when my art teacher played the Don McLean song.

Now of course I realize my eight-year-old view of the world was a little skewed (and self centered), and really there’s very little I understood about his life. But it makes me wonder how many people around us today deserve a little more respect and compassion than they’re used to. Here’s hoping we can extend a little more of ourselves today.

Things are going well. Summer is here and it’s HOT. And there’s so much to do, so much I want to do. If I’m successful you’ll see more on that later, hopefully in the gallery section. I’m craving a little artistic expression.

Also I’ve re-added my resume to the left side of the page since I updated it again. Enjoy.

This past month has been a busy blur; full to brimming with everything from good news to tragedy. It’s nice to finally get a moment to sit down and sort things out.

For the good news: someone I know well who was unemployed has found work — you know who you are! And my sister is getting engaged. I am so happy for her! The bad news (for me) is that she will probably move halfway across the country.

In other bad news, my niece was in the hospital for several weeks. In other good news, she is much better now.

The tragedy: a wreck that killed our cousin and his wife. We are all shocked… Please pray for their families and their little one…

All this, and time keeps moving forward at what seems to be an ever increasing rate.

I found myself wishing for a calmer life, and in response to that wish I ran into this article — it has comforted me a bit.
